What's In Vogue/ Style Idea- Denim on Denim or Double Denim

Happy 54th Birthday/Independence Day to our Dear country Nigeria.
God bless our country, Amen.

If you don't like the "denim on denim" look/trend, let me see your hands up!
Who else is as amazed as I am, as to why this trend was formerly a "fashion faux pas" (fashion blunder)? But you know how fashion keeps recycling itself, I'm glad it is no longer one.

Double denim, popularly known as Canadian tuxedo, is a trend that I think is uber cool and of course eclectic, and I would be creating this look soonest for the blog.

Because denim is quite versatile, it means you can actually also wear to work, that is if your office permits.

Meanwhile, let me quickly chip this in: We are all probably guilty of mixing up the words "Denim and Jeans". DENIM is actually a fabric while JEANS refer to pants made out of Denim. Which technically means different clothing items can be made out of denim material. e.g skirts, shirts, jackets, shorts, pants..

Luckily, both men and women can go the denim on denim route.. So you can skip down to which area is of concern to you, or go right ahead and enjoy the whole post.
 Here's How;

You know to be honest, there are different basic rules on how to style your double denim looks, based on various opinions but personally I believe you can rock your double denim based on your personal style choices, in same shades, contrasting shades; as long as you don't go overboard and feel comfortable and confident.

Regardless of that, these are the basic rules that you may as well follow if they please you: These rules may apply to both men and women.

Styling your denim on denim look is super easy, and the trick to getting this trend right is based on all the denim pieces you choose.
  • The two-toned look: Try two shades of blue denim that contrast each other as done here, with a light shirt paired with dark wash jeans. Essentially, lighter shades of denim draw attention to the body areas they cover, while darker denims create a slimming effect. For instance, if you have "wide hips", you might preferably want to wear a darker shade of denim jeans to give the "slimmer illusion".

  •   Double denim for women comes with a lot more options than it does for men, for example, you can wear so many different combinations! Denim shirts, jackets and vests can go really well with skinny jeans, denim shorts, and even denim skirts. The combinations are honestly endless.

  •  If you want to go for a triple denim look, you can even pair your denim jeans and denim jacket with a fitted denim shirt underneath, making sure that the washes are different of course.
  • A denim blazer and trouser-cut jeans are perfect for the office. If you want to look chic and sophisticated, accessorize with a sexy, slinky heel. Even a denim skirt on denim jacket can pass for a formal wear; like I said, if your office permits.

  •   For a casual look, try mixing light distressed denim shorts with a medium wash, over-sized, denim shirt.Well, depending on what casual means to you, you can also style your double denim with a pair of heels for a casual day out with the girls, your boo....

  • While there's a double denim rule that says "do not wear a denim outfit that is the same weight or wash, as it'd look too matchy matchy, you can make this work with your choice of accessories. The important thing is mixing up the denim with other fabrics and colour, drawing the attention away from the block one colour denim. so ADD some colour to your same shade double denim outfit.

  • Double denim can even be experimented with more by trying out prints or bright colours. You could try white skinny jeans with a blue denim shirt, or even blue skinny jeans with a coloured denim jacket; or a tie and dye double denim combination.
  •  Style your denim with a chambray shirt for the "double denim look". Chambray shirts come in different colours by the way, but there are colours that look exactly like that of a denim.

There's not much to write on this, as the same basic rules that apply to women, can also apply to men styling their double denim looks.

Denim on denim look for men is mostly worn in the form of skinny jeans with a denim jacket or shirt and works as long as it is done well.

The easiest way to pull off the double denim look is by having two different colour schemes that contrast each other.  Break up blocks of same shade denim with layering or colours.

In order to execute this properly, it is vital that whatever you wear underneath gives out a pop of colour. White is always a safe choice. Other colours to consider could be yellow, orange, purple etc. This can even be applied to the colour of your shoes and other accessories e.g: scarf.

  • Incorporate light-blue, white, or gray pieces into your double denim look
  •   If you just can’t get enough of your denim then mix a denim shirt or an indigo t.shirt with your jeans & jacket for a triple denim look!
  •   If you want to do double denim like a gentleman, throw your chambray shirt on with darker wash jeans and a downtime blazer, and finish by pairing up with some sleek slip-on boots, loafers, brogues.

  •   Keep the fit of each piece tailored but never skintight. Make sure all of your pieces fit you well. As long as everything is slim, structured and fitted, you can pretty much get away with anything!

  • Also keep in mind the same rule that applies to women applies to the men, in which darker denims create a slimmer illusiom, while lighter shade denims draw attention to the body areas you are trying to cover.

And this famous Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears 2001 double denim look is like a "No No". Probably what made people hate the trend in the first place.

Finally, what are your thoughts on this look? How would you be rocking yours? You like or nah?
Please share your thoughts.
